I know, I have more to do for the Onion Saga. And I will get those posts out soon. But first I wanted to share my new herb garden. I am excited. Why am I excited over this? Because it is on F**king WHEELS!
I have done several different types of herb gardens. You can make them out of pretty much anything. A couple summers ago I bought cute little tin buckets and hung them on the shed side of my garden. It was super cute. However, the sun was too intense in that spot and they totally fried. Last summer I did not do any. In the past I have put them in my living room window in cans or jars.
This year I wanted to make my herb garden mobile, to move in and out of the garden. Th more I contemplated and deliberated in my head, the more ideas I had for my husband to build from scratch. As I was going through some of my gardening junk in the garage, my old greenhouse caught my eye. I had purchased it from Menard’s a few years ago when I started my plants from seeds. I do not do that anymore; mostly because I am a klutz and I dropped the trays a billion times and had to go spend money on seedlings anyway. Now I don’t really use that for anything. I can‘t remember if it came on wheels or if the hubby added them or not. He did reinforce the frame for me at one point. So, there I had it. The base of my garden. No investment needed yet. Yet.
Once I decided to recycle my greenhouse, I realized I wanted to use reclaimed material for all of it (minus the actual plants). I put a Facebook post up asking for any old cans or pots. I thought old cooking pots would be cute too. A friend of mine had a lot of commercial size veggie and fruit cans from work and was willing to give them to me. Boom. Garden plans made!
The first doodle of my idea didn’t end up being what I actually went with. Once the hubby and I started putting the wood shelves in, I decided I really didn’t need more than one extended shelf. I only wanted 10 herb plants. The top 2 shelving sections were plenty for that. And then it left me some storage on the bottom sections.
I used a power tool, ALL BY MYSELF, to drill drainage holes in the cans. I labeled each can with paint markers and added some more little doodles to spruce them up a bit. Then I filled with dirt and planted my herbs.
Is this the fancies herb garden ever? Hell no. Does it function? Yes! Is it quirky? A little bit. Do I love it? Yes!
One project checked off my list. Lesson learned? You can grow plants without needing a ton of money. I’ll show you how I save space in another post!
